Book Review: The Flip by Phillip Michael Cash

Title: The Flip

Author: Michael Phillip Casd

Genre: Paranormal

*I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book*

Brad and Julie’s perfect marriage is threatened when they decided to flip an old, Victorian mansion. While Julie wants to keep the house, Brad wants to ditch it. As they continue the restoration process, strange things begin to happen, causing tension with the couple. Will the spirits drive a wedge between them? Or will love win out?

I love paranormal stories, especially ones with ghosts. So I was eager to read The Flip based on the synopsis.

It’s definitely a spooky story with the scary elements and the drama between Julie and Brad. I liked how the author created a backstory for the ghosts Tessa and Gerald. Much like Julie and Brad, Tessa and Gerald are a couple who faced problems both on earth and in the afterlife. Gerald he loves Tessa and does everything he can for her, yet at times she doesn’t reciprocate his love.

This is the second time I’ve read a ghost book by the author and I’ve quickly become a fan of his work.  The way he combines of paranormal, drama, and romance elements made The Flip a nice story. I’m looking forward to reading more of his work.

Book Review: Ghostsitter by Shelly Brown

Title: Ghostsitter

Author: Shelly Brown

Genre: Middle grade, mystery, paranormal

Publisher: Future House Publishing

Book Link: http://www.futurehousepublishing.com/coming-soon/

*I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review*

Reading Ghostsitter, took me back to the days when I read R.L. Stine. In a way, this reminded me of one of Stine’s books.

The story is about Tiffany Hart, a popular student, whose life is changed following an incident at a haunted slaughterhouse. After the incident, Tiffany is followed by three ghost children, who quickly disrupt her life. Tiffany seeks help from her friend, Justin Henderson. Unlike Tiffany, Justin is unpopular and other kids are creeped out by his ability to see ghosts. As Justin and Tiffany work together, their research uncovers an orphanage and sinister ghosts with secrets.

Overall, the story was quite enjoyable. It’s something that I think kids would enjoy; I mean who doesn’t love a good ghost story. The story offers a couple of humorous spots as the ghost kids inflict chaos on Tiffany. Due to their actions, Tiffany’s friends and family begin to think she’s gone crazy. There was a lot of suspense in the book, I was curious about what was going to happen to Tiffany and if she and Justin would learn the truth about the ghosts.

I also liked how Tiffany and Justin grew closer during their research. As Tiffany spends time with Justin, she sees him in a new light. With the ghosts disturbing her life, Tiffany starts to become an outcast and realizes how unfairly she’s treated others.

This is a wonderful book that I believe both parents and kids will love.

The Newbie and School Spirits by Leta Hawk

Synopsis

The Newbie Book 1
Kyrie Carter can’t believe her luck when she wins a spot on a paranormal investigation with celebrity ghost hunter Drac Petery and his heartthrob brother Gabe. As the investigation begins, her main obstacles are her unsupportive teammates and her lack of ghost hunting experience. Her biggest critic is the ruggedly handsome but enigmatic Spook Steele, who takes an instant and intense dislike to the newbie and seems determined to see her fail.

However, Kyr soon realizes that her flesh-and-blood rivals are the least of her worries. The investigation takes a dark turn when the team finds evidence of a decades-old murder mystery, and Kyr becomes the victim of the resident spirit’s violent attacks. The discovery of a family connection to the Berkeleys explains the spirit’s malevolence.

Will Kyr be able to help the Peterys unravel the mystery and put the Berkeley mansion spirits to rest, or will she become another victim of the house’s tragic history? And will she be able to sort out her romantic feelings for the off-limits Gabe and her growing but unwelcome attraction to Spook Steele?

SCHOOL SPIRITS Book 2

In Book 2 of Leta Hawk’s Kyrie Carter Paranormal Mystery series, a paranormal investigation on the campus of Willow Lake College leads to the discovery of a decades-old murder mystery.

Kyrie Carter is thrilled to accompany her best friend JoEllyn to their alma mater, Willow Lake College, for a ghost hunt with the campus Paranormal Club. She is pleasantly surprised when celebrity ghost hunters Drac and Gabe Petery show up with their team. She is not so pleasantly surprised when her critical former teammate Spook Steele shows up with them.

What begins as a routine investigation into campus ghost stories soon turns dangerous as Kyr encounters a malicious spirit in the bell tower of Appleton Hall. Upon further investigation, the team learns that a suspicious fire had claimed the life of a female student in 1958. After Spook becomes a victim of a similar fire in the bell tower while investigating, he and Kyr begin to suspect they are dealing with more than a simple haunting.
Kyr and Spook put aside their differences and team up to piece together what happened in the bell tower. The mystery deepens as they discover that everyone—townspeople and campus administrators alike—seem determined to keep the truth hidden about the events of that night.

The demons taunted. Feeling imprisoned by the voices in his head, Henry feared he would never be free from their reign. With no regard, he raised the bottle to his lips and relished in the blackness welcoming him like an old friend.
After a child went missing and Henry was unable to aid in the search, he knew it was time to clean up his act. With Gunther’s help and determination, Elaina worked to get Henry back on track to a healthier, more sober lifestyle.
The guilt from the actions of Gunther’s past continued to weigh on him, but through Quinn’s encouragement, he allowed himself to start the healing process. Their steamy relationship tested Quinn’s resolve and their future together. She faced a decision which would close the door to one life, opening another that was full of promise.
More survivors ventured into the small town and were allowed to take up residence at the school. Through love, friendship, and with a sense of community, growth began. But discoveries were made that would bring on devastation.
Faced with a battle of a lifetime, some felt survival seemed more like an option than something for which to fight. More secrets were exposed, lives were lost. But, somehow, a little joy and relief followed.
The question that remained was whose heart would shatter and who would be able to move forward?

Excerpt:
My murmur drifted around us as I began feeling sentimental. I slipped off my hoodie and vest, then decided to shed my t-shirt. I was still feeling self-conscious about my body, but I was determined to get it back.
She stripped off her shirt and bra, making my zipper on my pants strain further. I stood, unbuckling my belt and cargoes. They dropped to the floor with a thud. My devious grin came out when she got up and dropped her pants, as well.
Bloody hell. Never has someone so beautiful walked this earth.
She stood before me, her long black hair sweeping over her naked breasts. I stepped back in an effort to soak all of her in. The luscious curve of her waist leading to her hips…
A perfect vision. No one could compare.
I grabbed her hand and made her do a turn, getting a look at the ass I simply adored. My hand had a mind of its own, traveling around, enjoying the feel of her supple skin. I admit it. I was drooling.
I spun her back to face me, wanting a proper dance with my love. Well, as proper as a naked dance could get. I guided her to the center of our room, the cold tile unforgiving under the pads of our feet.
Humming a few bars of a Jon Legend song, I held her in my arms in the middle of our room. With one hand on her ass and the other clasping hers nestled between our chests, we moved effortlessly together.
In sync. As one.
I pulled her closer, singing the lyrics in her ear. Her body broke out into goose bumps. I was so glad I still had that effect on her because I thought I had lost my touch.
I dropped her hand and held her tight as we swayed in the shadow of our former selves. Her warmth wrapped around my body, holding me together as an uneasiness washed over me.
There was so much to fear, so much that she couldn’t even understand. Between the demons, the fresh sobriety, my life status, our future… There were so many things lined up, championing to be number one.
I hated living with a black cloud hovering over me. It made everything difficult…including love. Every minute of what was left of my life, I needed to work to restore her faith that I could be the man she dreamt me to be.
Grabbing her face with both hands, I made her look up at me, continuing to sing softly as I pressed my forehead to hers. With a slight smile, she gazed into my emeralds, enjoying our profound moment.
God, she was beautiful. Her perfect face, sensational eyes, rosy cheeks, pouty lip, the way her hair tickled my chilled skin, her naked body swaying and pressing against mine… It all had me reeling. I couldn’t ask for a better woman to hold in my arms.
Jon Legend had it right on the money. Elaina was my end and my beginning. The end of one tortured, empty life; the beginning of one raptured, satiated life. How could I not be with her standing tall with me? No matter what kind of world we lived in, she was everything to me. My life was only real with her. Without her, I would be coasting to my death, one discordant step at a time.

The Background

The Rengalla Descended from magical beings that could control the elements, the Rengalla appear human but are more. Besides their magical abilities, they live on average a millennium and a half, are rarely sick, and heal rapidly.

The LexTals An elite group of warriors whose purpose is to protect the Rengalla from the Dalshie. The current LexTals are: Dante, Cody, John, Morgan, Mason, Monroe, Tyler and two new recruits whose names the rest of them haven’t bothered to learn yet (the training is excruciating and the fail rate is high).

The Dalshie “Turned” Rengalla who’ve been corrupted by their magic — who’ve used their powers to hurt others. As the infected magic invades their mind and soul, a stain spreads over their body, starting from their palms and spreading up their arms. Once the taint reaches the heart and brain, every trace of the former Rengalla is lost, leaving only a cruel, inhuman monster in its wake.   Recognize these evil creatures from their stained palms. They can glamour most of the taint of the black magic, but cannot hide the infection on the center of their hands. They also heal instantly, have red eyes (when their glamour fails), and can only be killed — ashed — via decapitation or a direct strike to their heart.

Magic of the Rengalla Primary or elemental involves controlling individual elements — fire, air, water, and earth Secondary is combining 2 or more elements into another power, e.g. healing or teleportation Tertiary is the capacity of foresight (involves any ability to see the future whether it involves a specific person or the entire world) — those with this power are most at risk of turning Dalshie

Magic of the Dalshie Once they’ve begun to turn, the Dalshie can no longer manipulate the elements. They retain magic, but it turns black and it can only hurt — burn, maim, destroy.

The Colony Located on the border of Kentucky and Tennessee, this hidden building is the home of the majority of the Rengalla. It’s tucked in a stretch of rarely occupied National Forest and is glamoured to appear like an ugly old warehouse in order to keep the humans away. It’s also protected by a shield that prevents the Dalshie from getting in an attacking the Rengalla.

Interview

An Interview with Daughtry

You didn’t know you were Rengalla until recently, correct? How’s the adjustment been? D: About as well as you’d expect. It was a relief to finally understand why my mind was showing me the visions, to know that I wasn’t crazy, that I was special. *Daughtry rolls her eyes at this* I’m working to control my magic, but the ability to manipulate death isn’t something I would wish on anyone else. No one should have the power to play God.

What’s bonding all about? D: Bonding is our magic’s way of uniting two Rengallan powers in a way that strengthens them both. For me, the bond has supplemented my magic, giving me the ability shield myself from unwanted visions. For Cody, it gave him control and leveled out his powers.   But in reality, it’s more than that. Aside from the magical consequences, the bond unites us on a telepathic — and soul-deep — level. The link between our minds allows us to share thoughts and emotions and sense where the other person is at.   It’s both wonderful and a burden to be so open to another person. There are no games, no hidden agendas, but sometimes being able to read another person’s every thought isn’t easy. *Daughtry pauses* Sometimes you hear things that you really wish you hadn’t.

On a lighter note, you’re a known chocaholic. So tell me, what’s your go to chocolate choice? D: Ice cream. Without a doubt, plain chocolate ice cream. I could eat a gallon of the stuff.

What couldn’t you live without? D: You mean besides Cody? *Grins* Wifi! I binge on tv shows and would be lost without Netflix and instant streaming.

What’s your favorite possession? D: For Christmas, Cody got me a bracelet of woven green and purple strands. I don’t know where he got it, but the threads of both colors so tightly wound is a perfect representation of how the bond looks in my mind. Every time I look at it, feel it brush against my skin, I’m reminded of how much he loves me.
