Miles Away by Addison Kline Blog Tour

Title: Miles Away
Author: Addison Kline
Genre: Mystery/Suspense

The mafia couldn't kill him.
Prison couldn't break him.
Going home threatens to do both.

Miles Capadonno has made some mistakes. Once part of the Capadonno crime family, he took the fall for another member of the crime family who once tried to kill him. At age 17, they put a contract out on Miles' head for neglecting to complete a job. It was a matter of priority. Miles went to his dying mother's side instead of picking up stolen merchandise from the ship yard. When you're in with the Capadonno's, whether you're blood or sworn in, when they say jump you jump, when they say kill you kill. Ignoring an order is an offense of the highest degree. When they couldn't kill him, they let Miles take the fall for another Capadonno family member. Now 15 years later, Miles is being released. He is ready to put his past behind him. There's only one problem. There is still a contract on Miles' head. This time, Miles is man enough to collect on owed debts, and he will not back down from the family that stabbed him in the back.

Leticia "Letty" Alves is a saucy Latina and Miles' old high school girlfriend. She was only 16 when Miles was arrested, but she hasn't stopped wondering about the boy who charmed her all those years ago. Now working as a nurse for a home health agency, Letty's priorities are to take care of herself and her 18 month old son, Gabriel. But when Miles walks back into her life everything changes, and suddenly, the family that she had avoided all her life, is now breathing down her neck looking for Miles. Letty is no damsel in distress, though. She's a fighter, and she never backs down from a challenge.

Sparks fly when Miles and Letty reunite. Can they put their differences aside to become one again? Can Miles set down his pride and accept the help and love that Letty can provide? Will Letty get over her resentment over being left so long ago when Miles was arrested? Only readers know for sure.

Welcome to Carrion, New Jersey, where the Capadonno's call the shots. Miles was away for so long, but now the prodigal son has returned. One thing is for sure, the family business isn't ready for a bastard like him.

The Newbie and School Spirits by Leta Hawk

Synopsis

The Newbie Book 1
Kyrie Carter can’t believe her luck when she wins a spot on a paranormal investigation with celebrity ghost hunter Drac Petery and his heartthrob brother Gabe. As the investigation begins, her main obstacles are her unsupportive teammates and her lack of ghost hunting experience. Her biggest critic is the ruggedly handsome but enigmatic Spook Steele, who takes an instant and intense dislike to the newbie and seems determined to see her fail.

However, Kyr soon realizes that her flesh-and-blood rivals are the least of her worries. The investigation takes a dark turn when the team finds evidence of a decades-old murder mystery, and Kyr becomes the victim of the resident spirit’s violent attacks. The discovery of a family connection to the Berkeleys explains the spirit’s malevolence.

Will Kyr be able to help the Peterys unravel the mystery and put the Berkeley mansion spirits to rest, or will she become another victim of the house’s tragic history? And will she be able to sort out her romantic feelings for the off-limits Gabe and her growing but unwelcome attraction to Spook Steele?

SCHOOL SPIRITS Book 2

In Book 2 of Leta Hawk’s Kyrie Carter Paranormal Mystery series, a paranormal investigation on the campus of Willow Lake College leads to the discovery of a decades-old murder mystery.

Kyrie Carter is thrilled to accompany her best friend JoEllyn to their alma mater, Willow Lake College, for a ghost hunt with the campus Paranormal Club. She is pleasantly surprised when celebrity ghost hunters Drac and Gabe Petery show up with their team. She is not so pleasantly surprised when her critical former teammate Spook Steele shows up with them.

What begins as a routine investigation into campus ghost stories soon turns dangerous as Kyr encounters a malicious spirit in the bell tower of Appleton Hall. Upon further investigation, the team learns that a suspicious fire had claimed the life of a female student in 1958. After Spook becomes a victim of a similar fire in the bell tower while investigating, he and Kyr begin to suspect they are dealing with more than a simple haunting.
Kyr and Spook put aside their differences and team up to piece together what happened in the bell tower. The mystery deepens as they discover that everyone—townspeople and campus administrators alike—seem determined to keep the truth hidden about the events of that night.

Book Review & Giveaway: One to Go by Mike Pace

Title: One to Go

Author: Mike Pace

Publisher: Oceanview Publishing

Genre: Mystery, Suspense

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Tom Booker’s life is about to change and make him question everything he’s ever known.

Upon leaving work, he’s involved in a deadly car accident and in the other car is his daughter and a group of her friends. In order to save their lives, Tom makes a deal with two demons, he becomes their personal hitman by killing a person every two weeks.

Everything returns to normal and Tom thinks he imagined the whole scene, but a few weeks later one of the passengers dies and Tom realizes everything’s real. Knowing that his daughter’s life is at stake, Tom uses his job as a lawyer to find victims to sacrifice in order to save his daughter. As time ticks away, Tom struggles with his conscience, his religious beliefs, and faces trouble that put his and his daughter’s lives in jeopardy.

I admit at first I didn’t like Tom, his drinking and his womanizing turned me off a bit. Yet, as the story moved forward and Tom struggled with his guilt for taking lives, I sort of felt sorry for him. It showed that he had a conscience and even though what he does is wrong, the scenes with his daughter proved his love for her and what a parent would do to protect their child.

The demons in the story took on human form and I have to say they creeped me out, especially when they’d pop up at various times to taunt Tom about his deal.

The book started off a little slow at first, but towards the middle it picked up steam when Tom found himself in trouble and coming up with a way to keep his end of the bargain with the demons. As for the ending, it kept me on edge wondering was Tom going to be able to save his daughter and I liked how the author tied up the loose ends.

One to Go is a mysterious thriller set against Washington’s backdrop that combines the elements of crime, politics, suspense, and the supernatural.

Book Review: Ladies of the Lake by Ken Corday

Title: Ladies Of The Lake

Author: Ken Corday

Publisher: Beaufort Books

Genre: Mystery

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The author of this book is a former producer for Days of Our Lives and Ladies of the Lake takes on a soap opera vibe because it’s filled with mystery, suspense, drama, and of course a little romance thrown in.

The premise of the story focuses on a group of friends, who live in a lakeside community and are known as Ladies of the Lake. The women live in a lap of luxury with big houses, expensive clothes, country club memberships, and fancy clothes. But behind closed doors, their lives aren’t as glamorous as they appear. The ladies face trouble with their marriages and their husbands; well I’ll just say they’re jerks although I think a more vulgar term would be appropriate. The ladies are unhappy with their lives and so one by one their husbands dies mysterious deaths, leaving their children suspicious and the police following the case. As their secrets are threatened to be exposed, the women come together and try to figure out a way to clear their names.

I enjoyed the book and as I said earlier, it took on that soap opera vibe which I loved. Even though the book’s mainly a mystery, it does have romance elements with one of the ladies falling in love with a detective and plus, there’s a relationship forming between two of the teens. I was invested in all of the characters, the wives at times come across as snobbish, but once you get a peek into their home lives you feel sorry for them. As for the husbands, I was so mad with the way that they treated their wives that I was waiting for them to get what was coming to them.

One thing I liked about the book is how the stories are told from the perspectives of the different characters; you get a glimpse into the wives, the children, and the detective’s POV. I know that’s frowned upon, but it helps move the story along and bring the characters into focus. My only critique with the book is I wish there had been more focus on the kids, especially Alana; I would’ve liked to read her insight into the situation and her parents’ marriage.

Overall, it’s a good book and I can’t wait to read what the author comes out with next.

One More Dance by Valentine Cardinale Review

Title: One More Dance

Author: Valentine Cardinale

Genre: Mystery, Romance

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

One More Dance is a story mixed with lots of suspense and a dash of romance. Julian is a widower, who on a trip to Italy falls for the beautiful Alegra. The two meet at a wedding and make plans to see each other again, but their plans are thwarted when Julian returns to home to find his son Leo has been beaten. His romantic life takes a backseat as he begins the search for his son's attacker.

Throughout the ordeal, you feel for Julian and his daughters Flo and Frankie as they remain by Leo's bedside and search for answers. I loved the closeness between the Case family as they came together for Leo and shared memories of Susan, Julian’s late wife.

Flo and Frankie had their own side stories in the book. Flo is a college student, who feels a need to take care of her father, and when she's not busy hitting the books she's wondering where her relationship with her best friend Tommy is headed. Frankie is married with a son and looking to make a big change in her life. I have to admit I was a bit let down by the change Frankie was seeking; I was thinking it would be something bigger instead of her quitting her job to become a kick boxer. However, her newfound career plays an important part later in the novel.

I liked how the author keeps the suspense going throughout the story as he introduces the various suspects. With a couple of them, you feel sorry due to the hardships they’ve gone through in their lives. By the middle of the book, I thought I had the culprit figured out, but at the end the author does a complete 180.

With Julian and Allegra's relationship, I liked reading about their history with their former significant others and I was rooting for them to get together. However, I felt they were lacking in the romance department, I would’ve preferred a little more buildup and interaction in their relationship.

While the story lacked with the romance aspects, the mystery elements are enough to keep you intrigued til the very end.
